Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIP)

Supertech vacuum insulation panel with silver barrier film envelope, shown in front of a refrigerator application

Key Facts

  • Thermal conductivity: as low as 1.5 mW/(m·K) at center of panel
  • Up to 10× the R-value of conventional insulation at equal thickness
  • Thickness 6–25 mm standard; custom shapes, holes and grooves supported
  • Fiberglass or fumed silica core — non-combustible, ODS-free
  • In-house barrier film and getter production for stable long-term vacuum

A vacuum insulation panel (VIP) is a high-performance thermal insulation element consisting of a micro-porous core board that is evacuated and sealed inside a multi-layer gas-barrier envelope. By removing the air, gas-phase conduction and convection are almost eliminated, giving VIPs a thermal conductivity of 1.5–3.0 mW/(m·K) — roughly 5 to 10 times better than polyurethane foam and up to 10 times better than EPS or mineral wool.

Supertech produces the complete VIP value chain in-house — core material, barrier film, getter and panel lamination — which is why leading refrigerator brands, cold-chain packaging companies and construction suppliers source panels from our Fujian manufacturing center.

Why specify Supertech VIPs

Full vertical integration

Core board, high-barrier film, getter and lamination are all produced in-house, so panel quality and aging behaviour are controlled end-to-end instead of assembled from third-party components.

Barrier film engineered per application

Choose from metallized PET (VMPET V1/V3), transparent SiOx (PSI), aluminum laminate (V4), aluminum-free low-thermal-bridge film (V5) or nano barrier film, matched to service life and edge thermal-bridge requirements.

Custom fabrication

Panels are supplied cut-to-size with optional holes, grooves, chamfers and pre-applied facings for appliance cabinets, door panels, cold-room modules and prefabricated building elements.

Proven at appliance scale

Millions of panels shipped annually into high-end refrigerators and freezers, where a 10–20 mm VIP replaces 50–100 mm of PU foam and increases usable interior volume by up to 20%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the thermal conductivity of a vacuum insulation panel?

Supertech VIPs achieve a center-of-panel thermal conductivity of 1.5–3.0 mW/(m·K) at 25 °C depending on core material and barrier film class. For comparison, polyurethane foam is typically 20–25 mW/(m·K) and EPS 33–38 mW/(m·K), so a VIP insulates roughly 5–10 times better at the same thickness.

How long do vacuum insulation panels last?

Service life depends on the barrier film and operating conditions. Appliance-grade panels are typically designed for 10–15 years, while panels with high-barrier laminate films used in construction are designed for 25 years or more. A built-in getter continuously adsorbs residual gas and moisture to keep the internal vacuum stable.

Can VIPs be cut on site?

No. Cutting the envelope destroys the vacuum and the panel reverts to the conductivity of its core (still a usable ~20 mW/(m·K) for fumed silica, but far from vacuum performance). Panels are therefore supplied cut-to-size from the factory, and layouts are engineered with matching filler panels for site tolerances.

What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?

MOQ and lead time depend on panel size and film selection. Standard appliance sizes ship from stock programs; custom sizes typically run 2–4 weeks after drawing approval. Send your drawings for a same-week quotation.
